One number was never the whole story.
Open Rate Index tracks publicly filed car insurance rates across US cities and shows the full spread between insurers, not just an average. Most comparison sites give you a single quoted number. We think it's more useful to see where each insurer actually sits between the cheapest and priciest option in your area, and why.
What "filed" and "estimated" mean
Every rate on this site is labeled one of two ways. Filed means it comes from a real per-carrier rate filing for that specific city. Estimated means we don't have a per-carrier filing for that city yet, so we spread a statewide average across a small set of insurers instead. We never blend the two without saying which is which. Currently 45 of our 104 cities have real filed data; the rest show a labeled statewide estimate. See the full methodology for exactly how each is built.
What we're not
We are not an insurance agent, broker, or carrier. We don't sell policies, and there's no quote form anywhere on this site because we're not trying to collect your information to sell to insurers. The numbers here are a starting point for your own research, not a personalized quote, since your actual rate depends on details we don't ask for: your exact address, your specific vehicle, your real driving history.
Where the data comes from
Filed rates come from public rate filing tables published by insurance data providers and carriers themselves. Statewide averages come from published industry rate surveys. Both are refreshed as new filings become available, logged month by month on the changelog.
